PHOXChat User Guide

This article is a comprehensive manual on PHOXChat - how it works, how to use it, and troubleshooting issues.

The Interface

General

The home screen of PHOX Chat has several key features:

  • A new chat button on the top left.

  • A profile icon to access your settings.

  • A help button to access our support resources.

  • A chat box with a send button to type in questions and followup questions.

Each chat in PHOXChat is self contained. This means that you can ask a question, followed by a followup question, and PHOXChat will understand the context of your previous question. To clear the context, start a new chat conversation.

Answers and Experts

When you ask a question in the chat, answers load in an answer box that has several tabs. Each tab represents an "expert" that focuses on a specific clinical area. Here is what each tab means:

  • Synthesis: The final answer that combines information from multiple AI experts.

  • Medication Information. An AI expert that summarizes the medication information.

  • Safety Assessment. An AI expert that watches out for safety issues with a medication.

  • Evidence Quality. An AI expert that assesses the quality of evidence related to your answer.

  • Critical Alerts. An AI expert that looks for red flags and contraindications.

This tabbed design was used to mimic how a clinical professional works to solve problems and help patients in a safe and effective way. It is important to review every tab in the response, especially the safety assessment and critical alerts tabs, to ensure that you are using PHOXChat safely.

References

References are found throughout PHOXChat to allow the user to have the full context of where answers are coming from. All references are provided by the CPS, which is the Canadian standard for drug and therapeutic content.

There are two places you can find references:

  1. Footnotes within an answer.

  2. "VIEW SOURCES" button at the bottom of each answer.

Clicking on either place opens a window with all the references listed, including their content:

Notice that each reference includes a link back to the specific section in the CPS, so you can browse the content straight from the source!

As a clinician, it is really important that you always check the references in each answer PHOXChat gives you. AI models are not perfect and sometimes make mistakes summarizing information.

Feedback

There are two buttons on the bottom of each chat answer that allow you to provide feedback - either positive or negative:

  1. Thumbs up. Positive feedback that shows us what we are doing right!

  2. Thumbs down. Constructive feedback that allows us to improve the tool.

Each button opens a window that allows you to provide specific feedback. Please take every opportunity to provide feedback, as it allows us to continuously improve PHOXChat.

Using the Chatbot

Let's walk through some examples of using PHOXChat.

Drug Interactions Example

In this example, we'll be asking PHOXChat about potential interactions between warfarin and ciprofoxacin.

The PHOXChat response will take us to the Safety Assessment tab first, which indicates a risk of bleeding.

Browsing the Critical Alerts tab shows us that there is a major drug interaction.

Finally, the Synthesis tab brings all the information together.

Even when the answer you are looking for is provided, it is recommended to check the references for the information accuracy.

Dosing Adjustments Example

Let's go through an example that helps us calculate the adjusted dose for a patient with a creatinine clearance of 30mL/min.

The PHOXChat response starts us off in the Medication Information tab.

Let's check the Synthesis tab for the complete picture.

Even when the answer you are looking for is provided, it is recommended to check the references for the information accuracy.
